My search engine of choice. Snopes
aims to debunk or confirm widely spread
urban legends. Whenever
you hear a news story
and want to know if it's true or not, Snopes is one
of the best places to find the truth. Celebrity death
claims, quotes by famous people, and any claim that
up, you can go to Snopes and look it up. You
can search by category or other criteria.
A Project of The Annenberg Public Policy CenterSimilar to Snopes, FactCheck.org is a project of the

philanthropist Walter Annenberg to create a
community of scholars within

at the local, state and federal levels.
The Onion is
an American digital media company and
news satire organization that publishes articles on
international, national, and local news. The Onion's
articles cover current events, both real and fictional,
satirizing the tone
and format of traditional news
organizations with stories, editorials,
and man-in-the-street interviews, using a traditional
news website layout and an editorial voice modeled
of the Associated Press.
publication's humor often depends on presenting
events as newsworthy, surreal
or alarming. In 1999, comedian Bob
the publication stating, "It's the best comedy writing in
the country, and it has been since it started." In short, it
publishes fake news that sounds like it is legitmate. Its
content is basically the opposite of that of Snopes.
One article in particular has always been one of my
favorites. If you do a search on the Onion web
type the words, "Dolphin Thumbs" in the search engine,
it will bring up an article about dolphins that have
evolved opposable thumbs. I have seen articles from
the Onion show up in social media, with people
thinking it was real news.
